TOWN SUSTAINS SEASON-LONG TRAININGS
ON HIGH VALUE
CROPS, VEGETABLES |
Tanauan, Leyte -- The local
government of Tanauan, Leyte has sustained its
commitment to enhance the productivity of farmers
and ensure food security in every home through
the conduct of season-long trainings on high
value crops and vegetables.
Just recently, the 6th Batch Graduation Rites
on Season-Long Training on High-Value Crops and
Vegetables was conducted at the Food Always In
The Home (FAITH) Techno Demo Farm at Barangay
Maribi of the municipality.
The Graduation coincided with
the Harvest Festival featuring the crops produced
by the graduates themselves, among which are
upo, ampalaya, eggplants, cucumbers, Chinese
Kangkong, bell peppers and Formosa watermelons
which look like footballs.
Mayor Tiu said that the graduates underwent
a hands-on training on modern farming, from
the land preparation to planting to weeding
and pruning up to harvesting, under the supervision
of the Leyte Provincial Agriculture Office.
The trainees will not be able
to graduate, Mayor Tiu said, unless they are
able to go through all the processes and are
able to harvest the fruits of what they planted.
Mayor Roque Tiu said that the
6th batch is composed of mostly Sangguniang
Barangay chairpersons on Agriculture and other
interested farmers. He said that it is important
that this batch will learn how to plant high
value crops and vegetable so that they will
be able to serve better their constituents thru
their chairmanship in the committee on Agriculture.
As they graduate, the trainees
were given seeds and fertilizer by the Local
Government of Tanauan so that they can continue
what they have started during the training.
The fertilizer, Mayor Tiu said came from An
Waray Partylist Representative Bembem Noel.
Mayor Tiu expressed his appreciation
to former Governor and former Congresswoman
Remedios L. Petilla and Governor Carlos Jericho
Petilla for initiating the trainings at the
Province of Leyte Techno Demo Farm and extending
it to the municipal techno demo farms.
Mayor Tiu, who was among the firms trainees
at the Leyte Techno Demo Farm, saw the beauty
and the importance of the trainings. For one,
he could now encourage the farmers with more
authority since he himself has been one of them.
While Tanauan has always been blessed with plentiful
vegetables, Mayor Tiu said that since the conduct
of trainings, more plentiful harvests and more
variety of vegetables and watermelons have been
observed in the municipality.
Today, the municipality no longer lacks fruits
especially watermelons which are very important
to health. In fact, the town is fast becoming
known for its sweet football-like Formosa watermelons,
Mayor Tiu said.
To enhance food security,
the local government has also encouraged the production,
among others, of smoked fish, rellenong bangus
and the production of "itlog na maalat"
which are now aplenty in the municipality. (PIA
