The Seminar Workshop on the
Results of the Multi-Hazards Mapping in Leyte
is very enlightening, beneficial and will greatly
help the participants which is composed of the
local government officials and the barangay
captains, Mayor Roque Tiu of Tanauan, Leyte
commented when asked to give his impression.
Mayor Tiu commended the organizers,
the Office of Civil Defence, the National Disaster
Coordinating Council and the United Nations
Development Program, for the convergence of
the concerned government agencies like the Mines
and Geosciences Bureau, the National Mapping
and Resource Information Authority, the Philippine
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, PAGASA
and the Province of Leyte.
He said that the participants
learned a lot about the multi-hazards in their
respective municipalities and barangays by looking
at the geohazard maps prepared by the MGB as
directed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
right after the Guinsaugon tragedy in February
of 2006.
The partipants were also able
to validate the geohazards maps obtaining in
their respective barangays.
This will be a great in planning
on disaster-risk management in their respective
localities. Now, there is no reason why each
barangay and municipality will not be able to
prepare their respective disaster-risk management
plans, Mayor Tiu added.
The September 4 Seminar Workshop
is the last, in the ten batches of seminars
conducted for the 40 municipalities and three
cities in the province of Leyte. The last batch
is composed of the municipalities of Abuyog,
Dulag and Tanauan.
OCD 8 Director Buddy Estudillo
expressed appreciation for the attendance of the
expected participants and assured the local government
units that they will be given copies of the geohazard
maps.
